We have come a lonnnnnng way here at Volleyball Virginia.  It has never been more obvious as it was this Saturday.  With the weather being overcast, windy, rainy, and down right blustery we came very close to filling the first event of the year!!!  Just imagine if it was bright and sunny!!!  Not to worry, we have made arrangments to expand our court space on the oceanfront for our bigger events throughout the summer.  So keep on coming out and playing!!!
Not only that but if your looking for beach volleyball knowledge look no further than the Men's AA bracket.  There you would have found some of the top volleyball coaches in the area!!!  Will Stein, Dave Arnette, Jason Zuidema, Chris "less-slack" Lessick, Andrew "squints" Walton, and Kevin Holderby.  The cool part about this is that many of these coaches brought out some of their past and current players!!!!  One great example of this vast wealth of beach volleyball knowledge is while sitting with Andrew "squints" Walton and Chris "less-slack" Lessick in the tent we all came up with a great marketing idea for next year's V2 t-shirts.  It was a great idea and we will be calling it VOLLEYBALL VIRGINIA RULES!!!  Your sure to get a kick out of it.

Well, it was another successful Chesapeake Jubilee!!  We had a quality turnout, a few upsets, a few surprises, and a return of a certain young buck(et) and co. who ran away with the show.
The brand new V2 grass systems made their successful debut this weekend.  They stood up to all the tests of the weekend and never needed to be adjusted.  Nothing but the best from V2.
We were given the opportunity to deal with many new quality sponsors such as Toyota who, Jonathan "whitey" Jarrett, found out if a 500,000.00 truck could handle repeated blows from a volleyball.  We would also like to extend our CONGRATULATIONS to Jonathan and his wife Amanda "crotchbuster" Jarrett who are expecting their first child.
Other great sponsors such as Budweiser drove their trucks right up to the courts and even through them.  We have to thank Copenhagen for the chaps.  Also give a shout out to our tournament mascots HERCULES (the giant horse) and BLACK JACK (the giant steer).
The first place team went undefeated all day.  This is a tremendous feat at this tournament cause their are sooooo many distractions with the rides, food, music, sites, and crowd.  Not to worry this team pulled through with the return of one of V2's greatest young female players:  Megan "where's the money?" Schwenk.

While we faced severe thunderstorms and high winds all weekend we had many out of town teams stay and enjoy the beautiful weather that we ended up getting instead of the heavy rains and high winds.  While the locals were scared off by the threatening weather the out of towners dominate our field this weekend.

Although we have been fighting rough weather every event so far this year be sure to keep coming out and playing as the odds are in the players favor as V2 offers the most events and formats anywhere in the region.  After all it can be poor weather for all 17 events, can it?

June 1
Once again the weather was a non factor unless you count the smoking hot sand.  We played through the severe weather watch that we were in for the entire weekend that never came.
And once again the out of towners stole the show!!

June 14
So far this summer every event we have hosted has been met with an advisory from the weather service.  The last two times it was a tornado and severe weather warnings.  This time it was a smoke advisory from the fires to the south.  Never to be detered from their love of beach volleyball the players came out once again.  Must be the quality of the product.  They came from north, south, and west.  (No one from Europe this time.)
The women were met with a crowd as applause rained down on their courts all day in recognition of their fine play.  (And many of their fine looks.)  Speaking of looks both the women and men liked the new V2 look setup of the courts.  We do aim to please.  But just wait for the next event we are gonna knock your socks off.

Be sure to check us out again in another 2 weeks!!!!

We have all heard and even had the famous childhood argument of "My dad is better that your dad".  Well Scott and Kendra Drew actually set out to test that theory this Father's Day as we were all treated to a special mid-day Father's Day match.  Kendra "spousal abuse" Ward and her father Ken "thought we were playing to 5?" Ward (If you do not recognize Mr. Ward by name you may remember him for his patented and now famous "reverse, no look, behind the head, 2 handed spike.") teamed up to take on Scott "go stand at the net" Drew and his father Tony "but, i'm too tired to lift my arms" Drew.  Of course the paparazzi was there.  Not sure if they were from Volleyball Magazine or MAD Magazine but, there were a lot of pictures taken during this much anticipated match up.  In all honesty, we are not even sure who the winner of the match was but Mr. Drew claims that "i'm still undefeated in my age bracket".  But, regardless of who won, knowing both the kids, these two Fathers have done a great job and are both winners.  HAPPY FATHERS DAY to all the DADs out there (including Gene Wade).

June 28
We filled the event this weekend!!!!!!!!!  AND on both days too!!!!!  Sounds like the players are waking up and taking notice of the volleyball happenings in the local area.
The women players showed up in droves on Saturday. In fact they filled the entire division and we could not fit one more team even if we wanted to.   Why?  Was it the new court locations?  The new pink V2 nets?  The new red lines making these courts stand out from the men's courts?  The straight shooting, honest and direct emails from V2 that the ladies forward to each other?  Or is it the fact that we are so tall that the ladies can wear heels when they go out with us??

July 5
HAPPY (belated) JULY 4TH!!!!!
We have yet to have an event this entire summer without some sort of severe weather or ozone advisory.  Why should today's event be any different?  That's right we were in a severe weather watch all day and almost got through the event before the really serve weather hit.  We made it down to the final four and an unbeaten team in the winners bracket so we awarded them first and the rest tied for second.

It was a relatively short day but we had wayyyyyyy to many, absolutely hilarious, one liners to write about and keep track of.    We were privileged to be witness to the comedic styling of Will Stein (It was worth the appearance fee) Brandon Duvall (Who displayed excellent timing in his deliveries.  Must be working at the comedy club is paying off.) and a very rare special quest appearance by none other than Dave Albaugh.  The really scary thing is that all 3 of these guys can both vote and breed!!!!!

July 12
What a great day for the AVPnext Mid-Atlantic Zonal Championships!!!  The only advisory this weekend was a surf advisory.  The weather was beautiful and the players were greeted with a few new perks.  The women now have a center court to call their own.  The men's center court has chairs and umbrella's for the players.  There were new custom made V2 tents on site as well as 16 foot blades.  Not only that but we expanded another block to cater to the masses.  Oh yes, did we mention FREE VOLLEYBALLS!!!! That is correct.  Every winner of pool play got to keep the 2 brand new court balls and the top 4 winning teams in each division got new balls also.  Some players went home with multiple balls and other prizes plus some cash all for just 20 bucks!!!!!!  (That is unless of course, they had a free, or in Brian Day's case, 1/2 entry for paying attention to emails!!)

     MEN'S  AA
Lots of history took place on and off the courts this week.  For those of you who can remember this far back:  Brain "the green hornet" Harmon, Trip Fitch, and Steve Blevins are made appearances.  All married and with kids.  Others from that rat pack, Chris McGarity were there also.  The only one missing was Gabor Tarjan who just happened to call during the event.  These guys have all had many battles both on and off the court and it was great to see them all together and playing again.  (of course none of them were playing together on the same team and Brain claims that even though he and Steve tied for 5th that Brain won or is the better player cause Brian got elimination from the event after Steve did, atleast time wise.  So, the vicious cycle of trash talking and remembering ourselves as being better than what we really were comes back to the forefront.

Another piece of history or rather, soon to be making history are youngsters Josh "i remember how to register for the event after what happened last time" Walker and Mike Warren.  These two young bucks took a 2 seed into the playoffs and did not lose a match until the winners bracket finals and then lost in the finals of the event.  Both losses came at the hands of the same team.  Take that team out of the event and Josh and Mike win the AVPnext Mid-Atlantic Zonal Championships.  Look for some big things from these two.

Nick Korbe got his first tournament win EVER and Dave Goodman got his first win in a tournament EVER!!!  Dave's partner Kevin "we should have won 2 more" Holderby expects to be the most sought after player after accomplishing this feat with Dave and he asks that you not call him at home and ask him to  play cause he is old and has kids. Told ya people, history was made all over the place this weekend.

1st place:  Pete "the cambodian crippler" Duch (Va. Beach, Va.) and HIS FIRST EVER TOURNAMENT WIN Nick "i'm gonna wear the shirt over my medal and take it off in front of unger when i get home so he can see it" Korbe (Va. Beach, Va.)

2nd Place:  Mike (i was not sure which was the gay ear so i got both of them pierced" Warren (Va. Beach, Va.) and Josh "all i have is singles cause it was ladies night last night" Walker (Hawaii or Va. Beach, Va. for now.)

3rd Place:   Albert Koch (Va. Beach, Va) and Matt "we wish you all the best in your move to raleigh, n.c." Bosse (Va. Beach, Va and then Raleigh, N.C.)

4th Place:  Shane "we have to ref all the matches!?" Holderby (Va. Beach, Va.) and Chase "we know we ref after we lose" Holderby (Va. Beach, Va.)

Thank goodness we had the foresight to set up another block of courts.  We certainly needed them this weekend as we almost filled, even with all the extra courts setup!!!!

     WOMEN'S  AA
As the women improve so do their playing conditions as they now also have a full block with their very own center court!!  To give you an example of how tough it is to play and win in a V2 event ask some of the self proclaimed "local pro" women who did not even place in a V2 double A event.

August 2
Registration looked like a sea of black and gold as members of the volleyball community came out to show their support for the entire community at large as we all wore our Forever United t-shirts.  Almost half of the players in the event showed their community spirit by sporting these quality threads.  Thank you very much to everyone who showed their support.  We thank you and the entire community thanks you.

WOMEN'S  A
1st Place: Christina Baldassari (Proud community supporter from Richmond, Va.) and Jolinda Smithson (Richmond, Va.)
2nd Place: Kim Breving (Va. Beach, Va.) and Mary Smith (Va. Beach, Va.)

4th Place:  Kendra "twizzler" Drew (Proud community supporter from Va. Beach, Va.) and Heidi Thompson (Va. Beach, Va.)

WOMEN'S  AA
1st Place:  This team was a top unbeaten seed going into the playoffs.  They played the lowest seeded team in the first round of playoffs, who that they had beaten in pool play 30-9, only to loose to them in the first round of playoffs.  To lose in the first round of playoffs makes for a reaaalllllyyyyy long day.  And that really made these ladies angry.  These two ladies were able to extract their revenge in a two game final not just on the team that beat them earlier but they took it out on every team that they played along the way.  Note to all the women AA players out there:  Don't make Jodi Lindstrom (Va. Beach, Va.) and Jen Warren (Lancaster, Pa.) angry!!!!
2nd Place:  Marissa Wood (Proud community supporter from Chesapeake, Va.) and Rebecca Leedom (Proud community supporter from Va. Beach, Va.)
3rd Place:  Emily "don't say that he'll put it on the website" Flynn (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Alli "i like this number one seed stuff" Horn (Fredericksburg, Va.)
4th Place:  Jen "nice pooper" Pelkowski (Proud community supporter from Va. Beach, Va.) and Kari Hall (Proud community supporter from Alexandria, Va.)

MENS  A
1st Place:  Cliff Wingfield (Richmond, Va.) and Zane Reasoner (Richmond, Va.)
2nd Place:  Camden Lund (Va. Beach, Va.) and Ryan Scott (Va. Beach, Va.)
3rd Place:  Mike Powell (Va. Beach, Va.) and Ray Greive (Va. Beach, Va.)
4th Place:  Sam Hancock (Proud community supporter from Richmond, Va.)  and Richard "breadsticks" Murden (Va. Beach, Va.)

MENS  AA
1st Place:  Kevin Jones (Va. Beach, Va.) and Jeff Ernsberger (Va. Beach, Va.)
2nd Place:  Dustin "in-credible" Crosby (Va. Beach, Va.) and Luke Parks (Va. Beach, Va.)
3rd Place:  We all have either said it or thought it about these two players.  "They have the talent.  They just need to put it together. (mainly mentally)"  These guys, once playoffs started were seeded 11th but, they did manage to "put it together" as their first playoff loss did not occur until the winners bracket finals.  Dan " you cost me 4 matches for my team" Keros (Va. Beach, Va.) and Fritz Schever (Va. Beach, Va.)
4th Place:  Kelvin Colon (Puerto Rico) and Ron "this is my lucky court.  everytime i get this court i get the number seed" Horn (Fredericksburg, Va.)

Almost 1/2 of the men's AA division should be recognized as proud community supporters.

Thank you to everyone who believes as we do that the local volleyball scene needs a fair, safe, and fun environment in which everyone can enjoy.

August 3
Again with the supportive sea of black and gold as the Forever United T-shirts swarmed over the boardwalk during the morning registration.

COED  A
This division should have been called the "when couples argue" division.  And you may need to note that not all of these couples were on the same teams!!!  We had some brothers battling it out in a total grudge match!!!  There was so much topsy-turvey action in this division that the 4 vs. 6 seed was the winners bracket finals match!!!
1st Place:  Chris "i need a new nickname" Rogala (Richmond, Va.) and Christina "ball machine" Baldassari (Proud community supporter from Richmond, Va.)
2nd Place:  Deb Oznick (Proud community supporter from Va. Beach, Va.) and Brian Day (Proud community supporter from Va. Beach, Va.)

August 16
This weekend was all about the KING and QUEEN of the beach.  (And the best tournament ran at the south end of Va. Beach in over 7 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)  We busted out all the swag from AVP bags, Wilson official AVP balls, OAKLEY sunglasses, AVP sandsocks, AVP visors, and of course all the high quality Volleyball Virginia merchandise:  hats and new VOLLEYBALL VIRGINIA RULES t-shirts and of course the CASH$$$$

We had players not just from all over the state or even the region but we had players from all over the country.  This tournament would certainly have to rank near the top of our most diverse group ever.

August 17
The coed A division had a nice side story other than who won and who lost.  Scott Drew and Greg Thompson who are regular men's partners and never play with anyone else EVER, unless of course, it is coed and they both happen to be playing with their wives.  To make matters even worse they ended up having to play against each other.  So, they agreed to, just for this day, not share the same tent or share any food or water with each other.  ha.  They played each other multiple times and wanted this tournament victory very much and it was because of that these two teams finished in the top two.

COED  A
1st Place:  Scott Drew (Va. Beach, Va.) and Kendra Drew (Va. Beach, Va.)
2nd Place:  Greg Thompson (Va. Beach, Va.) and Heidi Thompson (Va. Beach, Va.)
